THE BLOG SHOWS PAINTINGS IN PROGRESS IN STUDIO SETTING.

Tree Landscape

I do not have the first painting here. But I did this landscape about one year ago. It came back to the studio and I kept looking at it thinking about repainting it. So I have started. There is a preciousness when a painting is ‘finished’ so seeing all the boring bits and mistakes, made feel a lot freer and less fearful to go back into it.

I have a few paintings rolled up and it might be a really good exercise to go back into them.

The Lotus Eater

This painting takes a loving look at the figure of a man lost in his swirling, inconclusive thoughts.

Like the lotus eaters in the Odyssey, he is relax with no pressing matters and no desire to enter into an active mode. Just here, now and enjoying. Bits of every day life surround him.

Kirki & The Nymph

Known as Circe in English, she is presented as necromancer, a poisoner, and a witch with the ability to turn men into animals. She famously turned Odysseus’ men into pigs for not obeying her. She then went on to have a seven year romance with the hero.

She is a woman happy on her island, with mastery over nature; she knows the power of plants and is presented in the painting surrounded by psychotropic plants making her potions and her banquet. Odysseus’ ship, in the background, is being blown to her island in a storm by a dark spirit.

Among the plants, you can find hemlock, nightshade, mandrake and others.

The nymphs are life givers and protectors of all nature; normally they are represented as harmless pubescent girls. Here the painting shows a powerful mature woman with the power to give life to nature. She weaves purple cloth out of sea water.
