A passion for expression, the natural world and the magic of colour.
My Basque heritage makes me headstrong - but distinctive. My way to look and express is unique because with my Latin American upbringing comes a completely different perspective, mixed with years spent in London and now painting almost daily in this beautiful Greek island. I use colour in a way that is exclusively mine. Juicy, sexy colour. Full of life and sensuality. As a woman, an immigrant, a wife and a lover, I have experienced different cultures and taken from each of them. Great Art comes from a great place and now is the time for my voice to speak truths in my female way. I revisit Classical stories and myths, taking my thirst for the renewal of these treasures to new interpretations. I look at objects, stories, bodies and landscapes and make them vibrate in colour, dream-like crazy images grounded in this upside down world.
I am working on the divas of the Greek myths, setting them up against the duck green backgrounds of the wallpapers of 17th century English manor houses and plastering them with the untamed wild nature and colours of the Americas. As a woman, working on tales told by men since ancient times, I am choosing to look beyond the story: turning poisoning necromancers into goddesses with a mastery of the natural world; pubescent harmless nymphs into women with the power to spawn a variety of vibrant life; the obedient daughter going through a sexual awakening set off by the words of a goddess.
I also work with simple subjects to develop the basics of my art. I have a series of sensually posed Mediterranean fruits; I am turning views of the pale local village into explosive expressions; I imagine my cat or the garden birds in dramatic scenes of contrast, rhythm and colour.
I come from Chile where I studied Fine Arts, then moved to London and now I am spending time in the gorgeous Greek island where Odysseus had his home. Ithaca, with its rich stories and myth, is now the backdrop to my journey in colour.
